Hugs may just seem like something you to do express your love for your family. However there is a much deeper science behind them. hugs have been scientifically proven to make us happier. They do this by releasing a hormone called oxytocin into our body. Oxytocin reduces blood pressure and lowers the levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) in our bodies. As a result we are happier. But there are also psychological benefits to hugs. Hugs can make you feel like you belong and can greatly increase peoples self esteem by making them feel appreciated and loved.
So in preparation for National Hugging Day which takes place tomorrow the 21st of January here are some hug related facts:
1. People crave 13 hugs a day.
2. Hugs usually last 9.5 seconds.
3. On average people spend about an hour a month hugging.
4.Children who aren’t hugged have delays in walking, talking, and reading.
